Hydroponic Lettuce Types
While any type of lettuce can be grown hydroponically or without soil, there are three more popular varieties as listed below. Because hydroponic lettuce is grown under controlled conditions, these lettuce types are all typically available year round.
Hydroponic Butter Lettuce
Butter lettuce is known for tasty texture and flavor. Butter lettuce is characterized by broad wavy outer leave that are green and tightly bound yellowish inner leaves. When eaten in combination a sweet and mild crispy taste is achieved. Also known as Bibb.
Hydroponic Romaine Lettuce
Romaine lettuce is the commonly used lettuce type in Caesar salad and provides a fine-bitter herb taste. It is characterized by tall sturdy leaves with a center rib and is tolerant to heat. It is also very popular in Middle Eastern cuisine and has a heritage in Egyptian ritual use.
Hydroponic Iceberg Lettuce
Iceberg lettuce is actually called Crisphead and is the most popular lettuce type in the United States. It is a very heat-sensitive lettuce type. Although Iceberg is transported easily, it has little flavor and nutritional content due to being composed mostly of water.
